Moderating a debate on journalism

At the World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) in Seoul, Korea, we moderated a lively ‘House of Commons’ debate.

The topic for the debate was a question: “Does science journalism need more journalism and less science?” With many science journalists focusing more on explaining and entertaining than on doing critical reporting, motions challenged the audience to think about whether that should change.

Could science journalism better fulfill its mission — meaningfully inform the public — by acting more like hard-hitting journalists and less like school science teachers?

Reporters, communicators and scientists from all over the world weighed in on motions such as: “Science journalists should work harder to expose frauds and scandals”, and “Economy and policy should be a bigger part of science stories”
